The human body expects stress, and is equipped to handle it well. But unfortunately, it expects stress to happen only in short intervals. People in high stress jobs or who must handle stressful situations on a daily basis may end up with a myriad of negative effects from too much stress. One way to handle this situation is to develop a stress management program.

When the human body is stressed from factors like payday loans, mortgages or even divorce, it releases an outpouring of chemicals. A large part of this is the flight or flight response that our body has to stress. When this happens our bodies secrete extra hormones. When the body perceives that the threat is gone, it stops producing them. The problem happens when your body always perceives a stresser, and the calm space between stressing events disappears. Unfortunately, this is all too common in modern life.

If you think of the body as an alarm system, then stress management gives you a way to reset the system. The first step in stress management is to identify exactly what is making you stressed. Is it your job? School? Simply not having enough hours in the day? Once you identify the stresser you can take action to help yourself better manage the issue.

There are three different ways to help you minimize and deal with what is causing you stress. The first is called action oriented. Action oriented means that you are taking direct action to help relieve the problem. The second basic technique is perception oriented. This involves working with the emotions and attitudes attached to the stresser. The last technique, and perhaps the most important, is the survival oriented technique. Survival oriented techniques focus on what to do when a stressful situation cannot be resolved. These techniques work on how to live and cope with stress while making its impact less pronounced.

Stress management is an important part of daily life in this modern world, and it’s something that everyone who experiences stress – in other words everybody – should practice in their daily life.

Dealing with stress during Pregnancy

People are under stress because of various reasons and environmental factors. Though we can control it, it goes out of our control at times. Pregnancy is a period in a woman’s life where stress is experienced for a longer period. As a woman’s body undergoes numerous changes, stress becomes indispensable to women in this phase of her life.

Women experience stress during pregnancy due to various reasons. Rapid changes in the body, hormones, socio-economic conditions, work related stress, smoking, alcoholism and others are responsible for stress. Prolonged and uncontrolled stress during pregnancy can eventually cause potential risks to the developing fetus. It can also disturb the normal growth of the fetus in her womb. At times it can lead to miscarriages, still birth or preterm labor resulting in low weight premature babies. Hormonal disturbances during stress are found to be the reason for such miscarriages or other untoward incidents.

Even stress in mild levels can eventually lead to depression of the pregnant ladies and make them unable to do normal functions. Thus it becomes important in women’s healthcare programs to train women to deal with pregnancy related stress. Stress can be controlled by reassuring yourself and relaxing mentally and physically. There are numerous relaxation and progressive relaxation methods to completely relax your body. As physical demands of pregnancy increase progressively, more time of relaxation and resting is required by the body system.

Doing certain less straining exercises can also help you to relax. However, you should not start doing exercises without the advice of your gynecologist. Meditation and listening to some instrumental music can also have tremendous effect in controlling the stress. These peaceful activities can also help in the proper and perfect development of your fetus.

Bringing in healthy lifestyle changes, proper diet and adequate rest can help you to take control of your stress and have a peaceful and enjoyable pregnancy phase.

Do You Understand Stress?

What exactly is stress? According to health professionals it is a reaction – physical and psychological – to the demands of your life. Stress is basically an alarm or protection system that is hard-wired into your brain. During a time of a perceived threat, your body will release hormones that trigger the flight-or-fight response. After the threat is over, the body returns to its normal state. However, if you are in a constant state of stress, this alarm system is rarely shut down.

Learning to manage your stress will give you the skills to reset this alarm. If you don’t do that, your body perceives that it constantly on high alert and that can lead to serious health problems. Learning stress management is important to your overall health.

Identify your key stressors is a great beginning. And then you can start to address them and provide solutions, which is key to stress reduction. Are your triggers the job, a relationship or even the recent death of a loved one? Even tiny issues such as the daily commute or finances are stress contributors.

After you’ve figured out what is causing your stress, you can develop tools to help. If you can avoid the stressor it is only logical to do that. If avoidance is not an option, you’ll need to figure out ways to cope. However, don’t think that you have to walk this road alone. You can ask friends and family for support and help. They may have some stress-relief techniques that that can share with you.

Learning relaxation techniques can be a great benefit in reducing your stress. This is more than just a bit of quiet time. These techniques revolve around refocusing your attention to an awareness of your body and a calm demeanor. Yoga and meditation classes are a great way to learn relaxation techniques.
