Latest Career Trends in the Medical Industry

Like most other things, the job market changes and evolves. Career trends change based on what jobs are needed and what jobs are available. Also, trends change depending on the availability of qualified people and technologies. The medical industry has undergone some of these changes. Here are some of the latest career trends in the medical industry.

Occupational Medicine Physicians

Careers for occupational medicine physicians (OMPs) have declined. Compared to other careers in medicine, OMPs are undercompensated and efforts to include occupational medicine in medical school curriculum have not been successful. Further, there is a proposed merging of occupational medicine and environmental medicine, which has not been well received in the field.

Nuclear Medicine Physicians

The trends look good for nuclear medicine physicians. The field has grown due to better compensation, regular hours, and improvements in medical technology.

OB/GYN Physicians

This field is fairly stable, but there has been a sharp drop in the number of men pursuing OB/GYN residency programs. Female OB/GYNs are preferred. Pay cuts as a result of federal restrictions may have an impact on the field.

Family Practice Physicians

With a growing and aging population and expansions of the healthcare industry, the family practice career field is looking good. The demand for family practice physicians is expected to exceed supply within the next ten years.

Economic problems have an impact on the medical industry. But, in general, there will always be a demand for medical professionals. The field is fairly recession-resistant and trends are relatively stable.

Importance of Good Health Services

When one falls ill there are people and places to where they will turn. Health services include the treatment and management of illness and the services which are offered through health care persons such as doctors, nurses and dentists.

The World Health Organization is one such health service. The World Health Organization (WHO) is dedicated to diagnosing and treating diseases as well as the promoting of the importance of good health and hygiene. With the help of the WHO the United Nations is able to obtain reports on the global public health issues and measures taken to improve the living conditions of certain people.

Health services fall into three categories. These are primary health services, secondary health services and tertiary health services. Primary health service will fall into the category of doctors, general practitioners etc. With the help of these people one can obtain an early diagnosis on an illness. With early diagnosis these illnesses can be prevented. Primary health services provide patients to communicate with their doctors and learn ways in which they can avoid certain illnesses.

Secondary health services are the ones which are obtained through a specialist. This occurs when a primary health care giver refers the patient to a secondary care giver. However, it is quite possible that many patients do not visit their local specialist. As a result they skip this section entirely and progress to the tertiary health services as the illness would have progressed considerably.

Tertiary health services are the ones which one can obtain through entrance into hospitals. If an illness is detected at the primary stage, there will not be a reason to visit the latter two. Therefore, organizations such as WHO try to make sure that this fact is made aware to people. They hope that with knowledge many avoidable illnesses can be avoided.

All these health services are greatly beneficial to us humans. This is the only way to ensure that everyone stays healthy and lives a long and happy life.

Cold medicine overdoses and spoon size

When suffering from a cold, the first thing many want to do is get rid of what’s making them feel miserable – mainly the cough, the sore throat, the stuffy nose – and so many head for the cold medicine. Cold medicine, while a wonderful relief if given in the right amount, can cause big problems for children and adults alike if given in the wrong dosage.

One factor leading to cold medicine overdose is the size of the spoon used to give the medication. A recent study conducted in Boston and Greece found that the size of spoons changes rapidly between different kinds of silverware. Teaspoons and tablespoons had a huge range in what they could hold. This means that a person could believe they are taking the right amount of medicine, only to learn later that they took way too much or even that they took too little.

Studies on the subject have shown everyone from college students to mothers and grandmothers have a hard time figuring the exact amount of medicine called for. Yet in the Cornell study, which included the 195 college students, all were confident that they had poured the correct amount.

To help counteract this problem, a patient is better off using the medicine cap that comes with most bottles of cold medicine. A measuring teaspoon would also be more accurate than a kitchen spoon in measuring.

The overdose from an overly large spoon might average about twelve percent, according to one study. At the time, this may not prove to be a large problem. But over multiple days, or in children, these little overdoses can start to add up and cause some major problems. Most overdoses given to children are admittedly accidental, partially because children tend to be more susceptible to overdoses. This occurs because the correct dose for a child’s medication changes depending on their age, weight, and height – all of which change rapidly in children.

Using Electronic Cigarettes in Non-Smoking Environments

Hospitals are for the Sick

Go into any local hospital and you’re going to see rooms full of beds with sick people in them. That’s what you certainly would expect to see and shouldn’t be a surprise. Hospitals house patients who are too sick to care for themselves and give them around-the-clock care for their illnesses.

Surprisingly, the hospital is one of the main places where people can get sick if they’re not careful. This is why some hospitals take special precautions to protect their patient’s and the patient’s visitors from exposure to bacteria, diseases, and other factors that can hinder health. This is also why hospitals ask visitor’s not to smoke, as the residual effects of the habit can be damaging to patients. Hospitals often have flammable gases and medical supplies on hand to treat patients, and smoke can trigger symptoms for patients with certain conditions, like asthma.

Many people who smoke use electronic cigarettes as a way to continue to enjoy their habit yet remove any potentially offensive actions on their part. These devices don’t emit the harmful smoke or smell of nicotine cigarettes.

Lengthy Hospital Stays and Visits

Patients who have to stay in the hospital under their doctor’s care for a lengthy time period may also be given special precautions during the course of their treatment. They may need a special room away from other patients, or they may require a rigid course of treatment that is specially designed for their illness.

If a patient is given a lengthy time of recovery from the doctor, the family of the patient may request that the doctor prescribe home visits or therapy so the patient can get treatment in more comfortable surroundings. This can be a welcomed bonus for the patient and possibly even help to speed the recovery and healing time in a dramatic way.

Using cement in joint replacement surgery

When a doctor uses cement and surgery in the same sentence, a patient may feel confused and understandably anxious. After all, most people connect cement with construction before they connect it with surgery. But surgical cement plays an important role in many health procedures, and especially in joint replacement surgeries.

Part of total joint replacement surgeries incorporates replacing the ends of damaged bones on both sides of a joint. This allows a doctor to create new bone surfaces within a damaged joint. In order to attach the new joints to the existing bone, a doctor may choose to use cement. Doctors use both cemented and uncemented joints during total joint replacements, and one is not clearly more beneficial than the other.

By cementing the new joint to the bone, the doctor creates a firm and immediate bond between the existing bone and the new joint. The cement option is often used on people who are older or whose bones are weaker and thus less likely to build the necessary connection on their own. The other option involves a porous material through which the bone can grow and fuse itself to the new joint. Younger people and people with strong bones are often set with this option.

One of the major setbacks to using a cemented connection is that the cement is not a permanent hold. In ten or twenty years, the cement may loosen. In turn, this loosens the bond between the artificial joint and the bone. Because of this eventual loosening, doctor will often try to give younger people the porous material in hopes that their bones can make a more permanent connection with the artificial joint. However, most loosening does not cause symptoms and it is unlikely that loosening cement would cause problems to the joint over time. Doctors are also able to track the loosening on an X-ray if it becomes a worry.
