<p><strong>Occupational Medicine Physicians</strong></p>
<p>Careers for occupational medicine physicians (OMPs) have declined. Compared to other <a href="http://www.soliant.com/">careers in medicine</a>, OMPs are undercompensated and efforts to include occupational medicine in medical school curriculum have not been successful. Further, there is a proposed merging of occupational medicine and environmental medicine, which has not been well received in the field.</p>

<p>Face it – more than half of the population in the United States is considered obese. Foods that are unhealthy practically scream for attention through fast food restaurants, advertisements, and easy access at every turn, even in the grocery store.</p>
<p>How do we make it a priority to <a href="http://www.helpguide.org/life/healthy_eating_diet.htm">eat healthily </a>in such an unhealthy world? Priority for one. This is a hard one, since willpower must win over desire. We have to set rules in our homes for our families and children so that they do not become a statistic, eventually riddled with heart disease, potential diabetes, or other health related illnesses.</p>
<p>Eat together as family, foods that you have prepared together. A great rule of thumb when you shop for foods at the grocery store is only purchase items that you can read on the ingredients list, as well as know what these ingredients are. Eat foods in their purest form and stick to maximum ingredients listed in processed foods. This doesn’t limit processed foods all together. If you love cereal for breakfast, you can still eat cereals – they will just be a whole lot healthier for you.</p>
<p>When you follow some of these guidelines you are eating foods that sustain life within your body. They will keep you full longer and you will feel more energized. You are gaining sources of vitamins and nutrients, while eliminating the toxins that have stored in your body by eating processed junk food. You will probably lose weight if you are maintaining appropriate portion sizes and your whole family will reap the benefits of real food.</p>
<p>Your life depends on it, as well as the lives of your family.</p>

<p>Pregnancy is not an excuse to go on a fast food eating binge. Even though pregnant women are eating for two it does not mean a free pass to consume calories without any concern for the consequences. Weight put on during a pregnancy can be difficult to take off after birth, which can lead to other health problems for the mother later in life. Mothers do need to increase in their intake of certain nutrients during a pregnancy, but carrying a child is more like being on a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrition_and_pregnancy">diet than going on a binge</a>.</p>
<p>The health of two people is at stake during a pregnancy. So it is important for expecting mothers to not only make informed decisions about their diets but also to keep track of the types of <a href="http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/nutritioninpregn/a/aa121000a.htm">foods</a> they are eating. Avoiding alcohol is an important and well known restriction to the diets of pregnant women. While staying away from cocktails might be a fairly obvious sacrifice that mothers must make, knowing to increase the amount of zinc in a diet might not be as widely known. Zinc helps to boost the mother’s immune system and prevent a disease from complicating the pregnancy. Part of dieting during a pregnancy should come down to common sense. A diet of fast food or other junk is not recommended.</p>
<p>Feeding a baby a proper diet is the first and one of the most vital steps that a mother must take on the way to raising a healthy and happy child. Mothers need to increase the amount of nutrients, including folic acid and vitamin B-12. Regular vitamin D intake can prevent the child from having a deficiency later in life. <p>Studies have shown that diary products like milk and cheese can trigger headaches. Milk and cheese contains a sugar called lactose. People deficient in the lactase enzyme cannot break down lactose and are categorized as being lactose intolerant. About 75 percent of people from African, Hispanic and Native American descent, and 90 percent from Asian descent are lactose intolerant. If you consume milk and cheese regularly and suffer from chronic headaches, start keeping a journal to identity if these foods are triggers. Some ways to deal with stress are writing your thoughts in a journal, delegating work and chores to others and getting counseling if necessary.</p>

This is because the reasons for erectile dysfunction can range from emotional causes such as stress or psychological problems (being taught that sex was “dirty” or the sexual urge was something to be ashamed of, for example) or because of prostate surgery, just to name a few of reasons. This is where erectile dysfunction products can help.</p>
<p>Erectile dysfunction products work in different ways, depending on the type of active ingredient they contain. For example, Viagra’s active ingredient issildenafil citrate.Sildenafil citrate blocks an enzyme that is produced by the male body. This enzyme actually attacks a necessary chemical that must be produced in order for an erection to occur.</p>
<p>This chemical is called cyclic GMP, and it is the presence of this chemical that causes the arteries in the penis to expand thus increasing blood flow to the penis. The increased blood flow from the arteries causes the veins in the penis to become narrower. This creates a sort of “back-up” if you will, because the blood is coming into the penis faster than it is flowing out. The result is a nice, firm erection.</p>
<p>That is, an erection will occur unless a little enzyme happens to come along which blocks the production of cyclic GMP. Even a small amount of blockage of cyclic GMP can cause erectile dysfunction. <a href="http://www.miomedix.it/viagra/">Viagra</a>, however, blocks this little “buzz-killing” enzyme and actually allows more cyclic GMP to reach the penis. And more cyclic GMP means a firmer erection.</p>
<p>Now cyclic GMP will not be produced at all unless there is sufficient sexual stimulation. And the stimulation has to be physical, mental, and emotional. So, all these jokes and comedic scenes where someone is hurrying to get home before the Viagra wears off aren’t true. It’s most likely impossible to simply “think” hard enough (no pun intended) to get any erectile dysfunction medication to work.</p>

To get a good sleep, bedrooms can be kept dark and silence should be maintained. Sleeping means giving rest to brain and hence mind should be well relaxed. Do not keep computers or television in bedrooms. If you have one be sure it is switched off before you sleep. Radiations from such kind of appliances can lead to sleep disorders. A comfortable mattress and proper exercises give you good sleep. Reading should always be avoided while going to sleep. Once the baby has arrived, however, postpartum depression is a  very real and sometimes dangerous condition that can be masked by the  normal lack of sleep, fatigue and healing that comes from just having  had a baby.</p>
<p>Baby Blues are something many mothers are familiar  with. These short bursts of upset and guilt are natural when the body’s  hormones re-balance as the mother’s body heals from the birth process.  If these symptoms persevere or intensify, then the mother may be dealing  with postpartum depression. The Baby Blues usually disappear within a  few weeks, but, if they last longer, it could be postpartum depression.</p>
<p>Symptoms such as loss of appetite, severe irritability, anger, mood  swings, and failure to form a bond with the baby are all potential signs  of postpartum depression. Many times the mother is incapable of making  sound judgment where her feelings and emotions are concerned, so it is  important that all close family members be alert and aware of the  possibility of postpartum depression.</p>

<p>One of the most common problems faced in the society is the poor sleeping habits. Sleeping habits should be maintained for a nice and tight sleep well. Certain points have to be kept in mind while you go for sleep. Sleep hygiene important as much as self-hygiene. Sleeping habits must be proper for a healthy sleep. Personal habits are, fix a bedtime to sleep and to get up. Sleeping too late and getting up too early is bad for health. It will create headaches for you which will create a big issue later. Avoid intake of alcohols before going to bed. Alcohol will help you to sleep very easily but once its effect is out from your body you might get up in the middle of night and it will    be difficult for you to get back a nice sleep. Avoid drinking caffeine too, it will cause the same effect as of alcohol. Have control on your diet. Do not consume oily, heavy or sugary food before going to bed. This will make you stay asleep. Do not exercise right before you go to bed.</p>
<p>Your sleeping environment should be comfortable like, using a nice soft bed to sleep, keep out all the distractions and noises, and set a comfortable temperature to sleep. Sleep in a position you like to and if you still cannot sleep, get up go to another room, read some books, relax and then come to your bed. Try to sleep in a position you like to. Reserve your bed only for sleep and not for other office works or studying. While sleeping think about the things which made u happy. Do not recollect about your worries. If you want you can take a warm bath before you sleep. Several factors like depression, mental tension or any health problem can affect your sleep. Make sure you discuss it with others.</p>

<p>World health organization (WHO) is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations organization established in the year 1948. Officially, the World Health Organization came into existence on April 7th 1948, which is celebrated as World health day across the world. WHO is also supporting the development and distribution of vaccines , diagnostics and medicines. WHO is aiming to eradicate Polio within few years just like the way it eradicated smallpox. It also keeps watch of the incidences of various diseases and issues travel advisories recommending the inoculations and other preventive measures that need to be followed while traveling to the affected regions. WHO also conducts various health campaigns across the world promoting healthy living, sanitation, and clean potable water and discouraging use of tobacco and narcotics. WHO has also entered into partnerships with various public and private sector organizations across the world to facilitate the research and development in the healthcare sector.</p>
<p>WHO has 191 member nations and they have six regional offices around the world with each regional office headed by the regional director. The regional Offices enjoy a remarkable degree of autonomy. Apart from the 6 regional offices, WHO also operates 141 liaison and country offices across the globe. People never know what problems they have during sleep, like breathing problems, walking during sleep, etc. It becomes easy for the doctors to diagnose sleeping disorders by this study. Some common symptoms to recognize if you have any sleep disorders are, check if you take more than 30 minutes to sleep after lying on your bed. See if you wake up at mid night and then it becomes harder for you to get back to sleep. Make sure you do not consume much of tea or coffee to stay awake in the day time. If you feel sleepy even after getting a good sleep of 10-11 hours, then there are chances of sleeping disorders affecting you. If you snore much while sleeping then sleep study has to be done at least once.<br />
Untreated sleeping disorders can increase the risk of getting heart related diseases, blood pressure, stroke, mental imbalance and so on. A polymonogram is used for the sleep study by the doctors. Many sensors are attached in your body to understand the behavioral patterns while you are sleeping. This is recorded and an analysis is made on sleep. It records your breathing patterns, eye movements, brain activities thus knowing the psychological part. You can also keep a sleep log or sleep diary before going for a sleep study test. In the diary you can record what time you went to bed, what time you got up how many times you got up in between, any dreams you saw and how much time it took to sleep after lying on bed. Sleep studies are also done for babies to know about their way of sleeping.</p>

To avoid sleep some skips their lunch and some drinks caffeine to be awake. Feeling sleepy after lunch is just a psychological aspect. We have heard people telling that â€œa day without tea makes their head blast like a volcanoâ€. So this sleeping problem can be handled in many ways. Lazy people always use some tricks but for the ones working very hard can adopt some techniques so that they can be fit and fine after a meal.<br />
First of all, minimum a good sleep of 7 hours is important. If sleep is not proper, then you will feel sleepy. Lunch should be a very normal one. Do not include much of non-veg items in your lunch. Always eat healthy and non-oily food.</p>
<p>The more you eat the more stomach takes time to digest it and hence you feel sleepy. Have a control on your diet. Look out what you are going to eat and how healthy is that for you. In break time you can have some drinks like tea, coffee or a chilled fresh juice. At least 10 minutes of break should be given after every hour. Exercise should also be done like a walk in your office or a talk with your friends cracking jokes and having fun all around. This will also keep you happy as well as energetic to work in the next session. Students also feel sleepy after lunch and even they can follow the same methods. That is why in schools and colleges a 10 minute break is provided after every hour. Eating lunch by setting a time table is also preferable to avoid sleeping after lunch. These tips can be taken into consideration.</p>

<p>Chickenpox, caused by Varicella zoster virus is one of the highly contagious diseases. Chickenpox spreads through coughs and sneezes of the infected; even the secretions of the rashes are also contagious. After the primary infection, the person infected gains life long immunity towards further episodes of the infection. It is found that the severity of chickenpox is more when it comes to adult males than in children and adult females. The pregnant women are more susceptible, and they run a risk of serious complications as their immune system would be suppressed. Chickenpox is known to occur in chimpanzees and gorillas. The first symptom of chickenpox is usually development of fever and rashes. The person infected by chickenpox is contagious for around 11 to 12 days which includes 4 â€“ 5 days before the rashes appear. Chickenpox is more severe in adults compared to children.<br />
Chickenpox is diagnosed by the early symptoms, appearance of the characteristic rashes.  The fluids within the rashes are examined for confirmation of the diagnosis. Even though the cases of chickenpox appear all round the year, it is more common during winter and spring. It is prevalent in children of age group 4-10 and Varicella has the infection rate of around 90%.<br />
The affected individual is to be isolated to prevent the spread chickenpox. Treating the surroundings with disinfectants help in killing the virus. Vaccines have been developed against varicella , and the vaccine needs to be administered once every 5 years.<br />
The affected person is treated symptomatically as there is no actual cure for varicella, patients require to stay at home, maintaining good hygienic condition, application of anti itch lotions etc help in relieving the symptoms and prevention of secondary infections of the skin lesions by the bacteria.  Antiviral drugs like acyclovir and painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen along with antihistamines are administered to ease the symptoms.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In today&#8217;s weight-conscious world, we&#8217;ve all heard the term  BMI or Body Mass Index. We all probably know our &#8220;number&#8221;. BMI is a  formula that is used to measure a person&#8217;s fatness, based on weight  and height. There are many health risks associated with being  overweight. Health concerns can also be an issue for those people who  are severely under weight.</p>
<p>While many health care professions think that the BMI is useful, others  are uncertain as to its true accuracy. Some professionals think a more  effective way is to measure waist circumference. Is it possible to use  both?</p>
<p>In 1998 the National Institutes of Health introduced the BMI guidelines  to try to get healthcare professionals, researchers and government  officials on the same page. These BMI guidelines replaced previous life  insurance tables.</p>
<p>BMI is calculated by dividing your weight by your height squared. This  result is then multiplied by a conversion factor of 703. You can also  find BMI calculators online. A healthy BMI according to NIH is between  18.5 and 24.9. Anything above 30 is considered obese.</p>
<p>Many professionals consider the BMI a good initial screening tool, but  will do more tests to fully look at health risks due to weight.  Additionally, the BMI does not account for gender, age or muscle mass.  It also does not differentiate between fat mass and lean body mass. This  results in some people such as athletes returning a very high BMI &#8211;  some in the obese range. On the other hand, the elderly may return  normal BMI numbers, but have muscle loss.</p>
<p>These are some of the reasons some professions think measuring the waist  is more accurate. NIH studies indicated that people with larger waist  circumferences are at a higher risk for medical conditions such as high  blood pressure or cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital study that was recently conducted  showed a definitive link between the number of hours a teenager may  sleep and the food choices those teenagers make. Sleep medicine  specialist Dr. Susan Redline conducted the study whose team studied 240  teenagers. These teenage subjects ages ranged from 16 to 19 and all  lived at home.</p>
<p>These teen subjects wore a wrist device that traced the number of hours  of sleep they received on three nights. One-third slept the nine hours  of recommended sleep each night, while the overall group average was  seven and a half hours per night. The interesting fact is that the study  determined that the teen subjects who slept less than eight hours per  night consumed more fat calories than their peers who slept more than  eight hours per night. Girls had a higher percentage than did the boys.</p>
<p>Parents will usually agree that sleep is a good thing for their  teenagers; but on the other hand getting them to get that sleep is  rather difficult. There are a number of ways to help teens sleep better  including some changes in lifestyle.</p>
<p>Teens tend to feel things more intensely including relationships and  events. This causes an increase in adrenalin. This adrenalin rush can be  counterproductive in the sleep cycle. Parents should try reducing  television and other sensory input and replace them with more relaxing  activities. Reading and relaxing drinks such as herbal teas can help.  Some studies say that eating a potato before bed can help raise the  serotonin level in the brain. This rise in serotonin will aid sleep.</p>
<p>Talking to your teen about the importance of sleep can help. According  to an article published in Prevention Magazine, humans can survive much  longer without food, than without sleep. Sleep is very important in  overall health.</p>

<p>Medical experts are positing that advances in health care will generally  not be found in new medical cures or findings, but in the application  of broader population based prevention systems. Rapid new developments  in the delivery of healthcare are currently happening and emphasis is  being placed on prevention and general well-being types of healthcare.  This translates to a cost reduction by maintaining good health within  the population base.</p>
<p>For instances, we are becoming more aware and better educated on  pollutants and other toxic elements which can have an effect on our  health. Our communities, in turn, are asking our healthcare workers to  help us safely navigate these issues of our health and safety. And this  has increased the demand for professions in industrial hygiene and  environmental health. The population as a whole is looking to health  professionals to help guide us on maintaining our health as well as  prevention of serious illnesses that could be caused by outside forces.</p>
<p>There has also been an increase in health research that focuses on  women&#8217;s health, substance abuse. There has been an increased demand  for prevention of STDs, HIV and unplanned pregnancies. The health of  disadvantaged and minority populations, as well as school health has  also received a bump in emphasis.</p>
<p>Because of these developments, there is now an increased call for  medical professionals specializing in these types of healthcare fields.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new 14-year healthcare study has shown that men who are insomniacs  have death rate that is four times higher than men who sleep normally.  These normal sleepers get a minimum of six hours per night of sleep. The  risk of death is even higher for male insomniacs who also have other  disease such as elevated blood pressure or diabetes.</p>
<p>Dr.  Alexandros N. Vgontzas and his team from Penn State conducted the study.  Dr. Vgontzas says of the findings that he considers this a serious  disease. He also states that physical problems go hand in had with other  physical health problems.</p>
<p>This increased risk of death was  only in those who describe themselves as suffering from insomnia. These  subjects while in a lab setting obtain less than six hours of sleep per  night. On the other hand, people who also experienced less than six  hours per night but did not consider themselves insomniacs did not see a  rise in death risk.</p>
<p>Woman have yet to see results, since the  study only revealed findings for men. Apparently there are still  questions. The research team did put women into the study five years  after the study on men began. Because of this fact and the fact usually  have a longer lifespan than their male counterparts, the final results  are not yet available.</p>
<p>However, Dr. Vgontzas and his team do  acknowledge that in earlier findings, men and women suffering insomnia  do experience more elevated blood pressure, diabetes and other deficits  in higher numbers than people are normal sleepers.</p>
<p>The team  used 1,741 men and women who were randomly selected, all of whom had to  spend time in the sleep lab. An interesting finding was that not all of  the subjects who described themselves as insomniacs actually slept less  than normal subjects. However, the study found that insomniacs who slept  poorly in the lab were at an increased risk of illness and death.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many of us have probably experience the stomach aches or upset stomachs  that can accompany the use of antibiotics. There are usually considered  temporary issues. However recent research has shown that prolonged and  repeated use of this medication ca cause changes in your gut that can  have long-lasting effects on the good germs.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s too early to know definitely whether this effect has prolonged  effects that could cause future health problems. But it is the latest  information in a stream of thought about how the germs that live in our  intestines and how these antibiotics may be affected them. There are  also discussions occurring as to whether there is a relationship to such  ailments as asthma and obesity.</p>
<p>During this most recent study, tool samples from healthy adults were  collected. Scientists calculated the numbers of how just a small dose of  antibiotics changed the numbers of the microbes that live in the  intestines. They found that while some germ numbers dropped, others  increased.</p>
<p>The study reflects how these bacteria and fungi coexist with humans.  Many of them are indispensable to humans, and researchers feel they are  underappreciated in how they affect our health.</p>
<p>David Relman from Stanford University, who led the study, says that we  should not take these microbes for granted because they are important to  the humane immune system.</p>
<p>The next study that Relman plans to undertake is the affect of  antibiotics on young children. He plans to study the use of antibiotics  in very young children (one to two year olds) because this is the time  that the bacteria seem to be developing differently from individual to  individual and can make some children more prone to immune-related  disease.</p>
<p>In general antibiotic use should be used carefully because the bacteria  that is causing infections can become resistant to the antibiotics. And  this new study questions the effects of good bacteria and how those  changes can affect our health.</p>

<p>Some  people know when a migraine is coming because of an aura.  An aura is a  sight distortion, which may show as spots, a temporary blind spot or  even as tunnel vision.  This signal can come as early as twenty four  hours before the migraine itself sets in.</p>
<p>Because there is no  cure for migraines, it is important for a sufferer to keep track of what  he or she was doing prior to the migraine coming on.  Certain aspects  of the environment can act as triggers, and keeping track of those  triggers can help a sufferer avoid them later on.  Common triggers  include stress, bright sunlight or a glare, changes in wake-sleep  patterns, intense physical exertion or a change in the environment.   Some medications may also aggravate migraines.</p>
<p>Taking a list of  these triggers and your migraine history to the doctor’s office can  help her find the right medication to help you suffer less.  The doctor  might prescribe a combination of a pain relieving medication and a  preventive medication.</p>
<p>Migraines can be chronic, but that  doesn’t mean that the pain isn’t treatable. If the first medication you  try doesn’t help, don’t give up. Relief may be right around the corner.</p>

These tips provide some healthy guidelines for  making good decisions regarding the food you eat.</p>
<p>Eat regular meals<br />
Regular meals are an important part of any healthy diet.  They can help  keep your metabolism going – breakfast has a huge impact on starting  your metabolism – and help you feel satisfied throughout the day.   Skipping meals because  you don’t have time to eat can lead to being  overly hungry later, and that feeling of starvation does not always lead  to health conscious food choices.</p>
<p>Watch your portions<br />
When  a restaurant gives you a helping of pasta, don’t assume that they gave  you a serving.  Learn to recognize the right portions for different  food.  A piece of meat the size of your palm, for example, counts as  about one serving.</p>
<p>Keep track of your liquids<br />
The average  American gets a fifth of their daily calories from drinks, not what they  eat.  Making smart drink choices can help to lead to a healthier  lifestyle, especially if calories are a concern.  Get juice that says  100% juice on the label to get the most out of those calories. You can  also try adding some water to the juice to dilute it and the number of  calories in a glass.  When out on the town with friends, try getting  light beer instead of cocktails. Your waistline will thank you.</p>

<p>Go into any  local hospital and you’re going to see rooms full of beds with sick  people in them. That’s what you certainly would expect to see and  shouldn’t be a surprise. Hospitals house patients who are too sick to  care for themselves and give them around-the-clock care for their  illnesses.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, the hospital is one of the main places where people can  get sick if they’re not careful. This is why some hospitals take  special precautions to protect their patient’s and the patient’s  visitors from exposure to bacteria, diseases, and other factors that can  hinder health. This is also why hospitals ask visitor’s not to smoke,  as the residual effects of the habit can be damaging to patients.  Hospitals often have flammable gases and medical supplies on hand to  treat patients, and smoke can trigger symptoms for patients with certain  conditions, like asthma.</p>

<p>Patients who have to stay in the hospital under their doctor’s care for  a lengthy time period may also be given special precautions during the  course of their treatment. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone knows that slouching is “bad” and at some point in their life  almost everyone has been told to sit up straight.  But that does not  keep the majority of people from slouching.   Many don’t recognize the  signs of muscle strain and tension brought on by bad posture, or even  realize the damage that bad posture can cause to their bodies.  Correct  posture is an easy fix that can often help relieve pain in the back,  neck and shoulders.</p>
<p>Posture is the position in which a person  holds their body while walking, sitting, or otherwise working against  gravity – in other words, when someone is upright.  When a person’s  posture is not correct, some muscles are forced to carry more weight  than they are meant to.  This leads to muscle strain.  Other muscles are  held in a relaxed position, weakening them.  If this occurs for a  prolonged period of time, the muscles may atrophy. Later when a person  tries to hold correct posture, it may actually hurt as inactive muscles  kick in.</p>
<p>A good example of this is what happens to a person’s  upper back when they slouch. Bad posture can cause muscle pain and  stiffness between the shoulder blades and around the back of the neck  due to muscle strain.    When a person slouches their head pulls  forward, making it harder for the neck muscles to support the head.  It  also makes the space where the rotator cuff tendon passes through the  shoulder joint  narrower, and as such, may cause serious injury over  time.</p>
<p>Proper posture involves sitting or standing in a way that  puts the least stress on your muscles and ligaments as they hold the  body up against gravity.  Proper posture requires the back to be held  straight and the shoulders to be pulled back slightly.  When sitting,  all three natural curves in the back should be visible while the back is  straight against the back of the chair.  Placing a rolled towel or a  lumbar support in a chair can help a person make sure that their sitting  posture is correct.</p>

Most  people don’t realize that gout is actually a form of arthritis, and that  there are multiple kinds of gout.  In fact, this disease is often  misunderstood and rumors about what cause it and how can be treated run  rampant.  But for those suffering from this condition, it is important  to separate truth from fiction.</p>
<p>Rumor: Gout starts in the toes.<br />
Gout can start in the toes, and the first attack is often accompanied  by the toes turning red, feeling hot to the touch, and swelling.  The  affected joint is also extremely tender. But some people have also  reported pain in their heels or other joints.  The ankle, knee, or even  the fingers can start aching with the first attack of gout as well.</p>
<p>Rumor: Once a person has a gout attack, they will happen regularly.<br />
People can go months and in some occasions even years between gout  attacks.  In one study, 7% of patients did not have any recurrence of  gout for 10 years after the first attack.  Normally, though, a second  attack happens somewhere between six months and two years after the  first.  A large majority of patients can expect a second attack within a  year.  But as this suggests, it is impossible to tell just when a gout  attack will occur or how much time will pass between attacks.  Each  attack, however, does tend to increase in severity.</p>
<p>Rumor: Rich food and too much meat cause gout.<br />
Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the joints.  Uric acid  builds up when the kidneys cannot clean it out of the blood as fast as  it is produced or when the body begins to produce too much.  Sometimes  the combination causes acid build up.  Foods rich in purines, which  include all meat, do contribute to a buildup of uric acid when broken  down by the body, but dietary restrictions are now considered secondary  treatments to gout medications.</p>

In its most general form arthritis means that  one or more of the joints are inflamed and that the results are  swelling, stiffness and limited mobility around the affected joints.  In  other words, those who have arthritis are extremely sore and swollen.</p>
<p>Arthritis does not have just one cause, but rather hundreds.  The  specific cause is linked the specific type of arthritis that a patient  suffers from.  Some of the most common types include rheumatoid  arthritis and osteoarthritis.  Aside from these most well known, there  are over a hundred different kinds of arthritis.</p>
<p>One thing that  patients with arthritis can do to help relieve the pain associated with  their condition (depending on which joints are affected) is aerobic  exercise. The American College of Sports Medicine says that aerobic  exercise is &#8220;any activity that uses large muscle groups, can be  maintained continuously, and is rhythmic in nature.&#8221;  Things like  aerobic dance, swimming, water therapy classes, bicycling and even  walking are considered aerobic exercise.</p>
<p>A recent study from  the University of Grenoble Medical School in France has said that  aerobic activity is safe for patients with stable rheumatoid arthritis.   Aside from safe, the patients who participated in the study were more  pain free and had better joint movement as well.  Overall, this helped  the patients have a higher quality of life.  Other studies have also  been conducted indicating that aerobic exercise could help with sleeping  patterns as well.</p>
<p>The important thing to note about doing  aerobic exercise with rheumatoid arthritis is that the exercise should  be non-rigorous exercise and the patients should be careful not to  overdue it.  The studies on the effects of aerobic exercise on arthritis  are still relatively new and more studies and trials are still being  conducted about the clinical effects.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Technology is creeping further and further into the doctor’s office as  more and more doctors are trading in paper patient charts for laptops  and big film copies of MRI images to ones on Cd&#8217;s.  As more doctors  switch over to electronic records, it is important to understand just  how beneficial this is for patients, doctors and everyone involved in  the health care industry.</p>
<p>Electronic records mean that records  are kept on a computer instead of on paper.  Often, they are called  EHRs, and are important because of their “meaningful use ” – otherwise  known as their ability to improve patient care.  Electronic health  records become meaningful when they make it easier to make copies of  your health records, as well as making it easier to read and understand  them.  Perhaps the most important aspect, though, is that electronic  health records are easier to share between doctors, hospitals and  patients than paper health records have previously been.   This means  that important information about your health can be passed quicker and  more accurately, resulting in better care for a patient.  Electronic  records can also mean less errors and lower costs.</p>
<p>Instead of  multiple doctors each keeping separate health records relating to their  specialties, charts can be easily passed between doctors to develop a  more comprehensive picture of a patient’s health.</p>
<p>Electronic  records can also make life easier for a patient after care.  Follow up  care can easily be provided for a patient without effort including  things like picture of physical therapy exercises.</p>
<p>Because of  the many benefits of electronic records, the switch from paper to  electronic records is inevitable.  At the moment, though, most health  records are still kept on paper charts.  But recently the Government has  started introducing incentives to hospitals in order to help switch an  industry in transition switch from paper records over to the more  helpful electronic ones.</p>

While  that’s not very specific, it is very hard to get much more exact on  Fibromyalgia.  This is why getting a diagnoses of Fibromyalgia is  extremely hard.</p>
<p>There are no tests for Fibromyalgia, nothing  that blood work or an x-ray will show.  As a result, patients can spend  months or even years getting tested for everything from rheumatoid  arthritis to mononucleosis before finally reaching a Fibromyalgia  diagnoses.  Further complicating the diagnoses are symptoms like  stomachaches and headaches which may also be connected to the  Fibromyalgia.  Fibromyalgia has also been connected to sleep apnea and  restless leg syndrome as well.</p>
<p>The reason that this problem is  so elusive lies in what causes the condition itself.  Fibromyalgia seems  to occur when the brain and spinal cord start to process pain signals  in a different way than normal.  These nerve centers start to respond  more strongly to touch and to pressure, and the results of this can be  wide and varied, leading to the difficulty in diagnosing this elusive  condition.</p>
<p>Once Fibromyalgia is diagnosed, the next step is  deciding how to best manage the pain.  Physical therapy and moderate  exercise can help release the muscles, making it easier to move without  pain. Both over the counter and prescription pain medication can help to  relieve the pain associated with this condition.  But Fibromyalgia is  touchy. One day someone with Fibromyalgia might feel wonderful, while  the next day they might be bed ridden.  But this does not mean someone  with Fibromyalgia should withdraw from their daily activities. In fact,  people who quit their normal level of activity tend to have more pain  that people who don’t.  The key is to plan for an off-day, and be ready  to manage the pain when it comes.</p>

<p>With all of the appointments, meetings and everything else to remember throughout the day, sometimes take medication falls by the wayside. A missed antibiotic here, a skipped vitamin there may not seem like a big problem at the time but for some medications timing is extremely important. Luckily, with all the technology available today almost everyone has some way to remind themselves when it’s time to take their medicine.</p>
<p>Cell phones have become a staple of everyday life; most people will not leave the house without them. Because these devices are in almost constant contact with their owners, they serve as prime tools for helping manage a patient’s health.</p>
<p>Take Ann as an example. Ann has Parkinson’s and needs to take her medicine four times a day. It is very important, but relatively new to her, as she spent the first fifty years of her life extremely healthy. In order to help her remember when to take her pills, Ann activated the alarm on her phone to go off every day when it comes time to take her pills. This way, she knows when to take her medication no matter where she is, and it never slips her mind.</p>
<p>Cell phones are not always a good option for everyone, though, especially if someone works in an office. Another option is to use the computer to remind yourself what time to take your medicines. Many who work in an office sit near or at a computer for the majority of their time at work. Writing a desktop post-it might be enough to trigger your memory and remind you that it is time to take your medicine. Another option is sending a reminder email to whatever account is the most accessible at work. Multiple programs will set up daily reminder emails, sending them to a specified account at whatever time is chosen. These programs come in handy as a memory aid to help keep patients and their medicine on track.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you know someone that is suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, the  best thing to do is offer to help them get help. If the person is  receptive, you can help them do research on potential residential drug  and alcohol treatment centers. It&#8217;s not a good idea to force someone to  enter a treatment center because the recovery rate is a lot lower for  participants who are there against their will. Treatment centers can  cost a lot of money too, so they are really only for people ready to  make a change in their lives.</p>
<p>Residents will undergo a thorough  search on the first day at the treatment center. Both the person and  belongings will be searched. This is to ensure the patient doesn&#8217;t bring  any items into the facility that are against the rules and that would  be counterproductive in the treatment process. It is very hard for  someone suffering from drug and alcohol abuse to make the adjustment to  living without it, so great care will be taken during the search to make  the individual as comfortable as possible.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.stgregoryctr.com/">Residential drug and alcohol treatment centers</a> are not designed to look like hospitals. Patients are usually given  their own rooms and have surroundings that are comfortable and remind  them of home. Patients are encouraged to bring pictures of family and  friends that support them in their decision to give up drugs and  alcohol. Most of the workers do not even wear hospital attire. They are  dressed professionally to make the patients feel comfortable.</p>
<p>Once  a patient has undergone treatment in the facility, they are allowed to  go home. Ongoing counseling is required to keep them on the right path.  It&#8217;s easy for someone to have a relapse and start using drugs and  alcohol again, so it is important they have a support system in place so  they can be successful living on their own and holding a job.</p>
