Latest Career Trends in the Medical Industry

Like most other things, the job market changes and evolves. Career trends change based on what jobs are needed and what jobs are available. Also, trends change depending on the availability of qualified people and technologies. The medical industry has undergone some of these changes. Here are some of the latest career trends in the medical industry.

Occupational Medicine Physicians

Careers for occupational medicine physicians (OMPs) have declined. Compared to other careers in medicine, OMPs are undercompensated and efforts to include occupational medicine in medical school curriculum have not been successful. Further, there is a proposed merging of occupational medicine and environmental medicine, which has not been well received in the field.

Nuclear Medicine Physicians

The trends look good for nuclear medicine physicians. The field has grown due to better compensation, regular hours, and improvements in medical technology.

OB/GYN Physicians

This field is fairly stable, but there has been a sharp drop in the number of men pursuing OB/GYN residency programs. Female OB/GYNs are preferred. Pay cuts as a result of federal restrictions may have an impact on the field.

Family Practice Physicians

With a growing and aging population and expansions of the healthcare industry, the family practice career field is looking good. The demand for family practice physicians is expected to exceed supply within the next ten years.

Economic problems have an impact on the medical industry. But, in general, there will always be a demand for medical professionals. The field is fairly recession-resistant and trends are relatively stable.

Healthy Eating in an Unhealthy World

Example of an American grocery store aisle.

Face it – more than half of the population in the United States is considered obese. Foods that are unhealthy practically scream for attention through fast food restaurants, advertisements, and easy access at every turn, even in the grocery store.

How do we make it a priority to eat healthily in such an unhealthy world? Priority for one. This is a hard one, since willpower must win over desire. We have to set rules in our homes for our families and children so that they do not become a statistic, eventually riddled with heart disease, potential diabetes, or other health related illnesses.

Eat together as family, foods that you have prepared together. A great rule of thumb when you shop for foods at the grocery store is only purchase items that you can read on the ingredients list, as well as know what these ingredients are. Eat foods in their purest form and stick to maximum ingredients listed in processed foods. This doesn’t limit processed foods all together. If you love cereal for breakfast, you can still eat cereals – they will just be a whole lot healthier for you.

When you follow some of these guidelines you are eating foods that sustain life within your body. They will keep you full longer and you will feel more energized. You are gaining sources of vitamins and nutrients, while eliminating the toxins that have stored in your body by eating processed junk food. You will probably lose weight if you are maintaining appropriate portion sizes and your whole family will reap the benefits of real food.

Your life depends on it, as well as the lives of your family.

Dieting while Pregnant

Nutrition in pregnancy. Pregnant woman eating ...

Image via Wikipedia

Pregnancy is not an excuse to go on a fast food eating binge. Even though pregnant women are eating for two it does not mean a free pass to consume calories without any concern for the consequences. Weight put on during a pregnancy can be difficult to take off after birth, which can lead to other health problems for the mother later in life. Mothers do need to increase in their intake of certain nutrients during a pregnancy, but carrying a child is more like being on a diet than going on a binge.

The health of two people is at stake during a pregnancy. So it is important for expecting mothers to not only make informed decisions about their diets but also to keep track of the types of foods they are eating. Avoiding alcohol is an important and well known restriction to the diets of pregnant women. While staying away from cocktails might be a fairly obvious sacrifice that mothers must make, knowing to increase the amount of zinc in a diet might not be as widely known. Zinc helps to boost the mother’s immune system and prevent a disease from complicating the pregnancy. Part of dieting during a pregnancy should come down to common sense. A diet of fast food or other junk is not recommended.

Feeding a baby a proper diet is the first and one of the most vital steps that a mother must take on the way to raising a healthy and happy child. Mothers need to increase the amount of nutrients, including folic acid and vitamin B-12. Regular vitamin D intake can prevent the child from having a deficiency later in life. Rather than worrying about a diet, parents should consult a doctor and monitor the health of both the mother and child. By keeping track of the pregnancy week by week, parents can be sure that their baby will be healthy.

Top 3 Headache PreventionTips

A headache is defined as pain in the head or upper neck. The most common forms of headaches are tension and migraine headaches. According to a 2011 report from WrongDiagnosis.com, one out of six people suffer from headaches. Headaches can go from mild to severe. Severe headaches can greatly interrupt your life. Here are three headache prevention tips that can help you take your life back.

1. Avoid or Reduce Diary Intake

Studies have shown that diary products like milk and cheese can trigger headaches. Milk and cheese contains a sugar called lactose. People deficient in the lactase enzyme cannot break down lactose and are categorized as being lactose intolerant. About 75 percent of people from African, Hispanic and Native American descent, and 90 percent from Asian descent are lactose intolerant. If you consume milk and cheese regularly and suffer from chronic headaches, start keeping a journal to identity if these foods are triggers. Some alternatives to milk are lactose-free, soy and almond milk

2. Get Enough Sleep

Getting the required 8 to 9 hours of sleep for adults, is vital for your health. If you wake up in the mornings with headaches and get frequent headaches throughout the day, a lack of sleep may be the culprit. If you have trouble sleeping, you can try taking melatonin. Melatonin is a natural sleep inducing chemical in your brain; and is available in pill form over the counter. For any concerns, check with your doctor to see if melatonin would be right for you.

3. Practice Stress Management

Having some stress at times in your life is unavoidable. The key factor in stress is how you deal with it. If you allow a stressful situation to internalize, then it can cause headaches. Some ways to deal with stress are writing your thoughts in a journal, delegating work and chores to others and getting counseling if necessary.

Tips to Prevent Getting the Flu

Influenza, most commonly called the flu, is a viral infection. The three most common types of flu viruses are influenza A or H3N2, influenza B and the 2009 H1N1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading organization in the U.S. that oversees statistical research on flu activity. Here are some tips that can prevent you from getting the flu.

  • Get Flu Shot

The CDC recommends getting the flu shot each year; as the most effective way to prevent getting the flu. People who are at a high risk of developing complications from the flu are stongly encouraged to get the flu shot. High risk persons include the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses.

  • Get Sufficient Sleep

Getting sufficient sleep is important for our body’s to function properly and be healthy. A healthy body means a strong immune system, which is necessary to fight-off infections like the flu. The recommended hours of sleep according to the CDC is as follows: 8 to 9 hours for adults, 8.5 to 9.5 hours for those between ages 10 to 17, 10 to 14 hours for toddlers and children, and 12 to 18 hours for infants.

  • Eat Balanced Meals

Consuming a balanced diet that contains lean meats, frutis and vegetables provides increased minerals and vitamins to the body. Vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C, E, magnesium and potassium are vital in building a strong immune system. A great way to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet is to consume 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices.

  • Take Vitamins Daily

When taking vitamins, it is important to realize that they are a supplement to your diet and not a replacement. Vitamins can provide your body with increased levels of nutrients that can aid in strenghtening your immune system; thus making you more resistant to catching the flu.

How important is Health Insurance?

Many people have been turned away from hospitals even when it is a matter of life and death because they do not have health insurance.

Having health insurance ensures that timely medical care is received. Many believe that they can simply visit the emergency room and they will be taken care of. But this is not so. People who do not have health insurance do not get proper medical care and does not get it on time.

Health insurance is something which most people do not think about until it is too late. How the system works is that the insurer pays the cost of the insured’s medical bills. This does not mean that they pay the entire amount. It usually varies according to each insurance company. Most people receive medical insurance through their place of work. The rest have to do so privately.

Health insurance is important to all humans. For the older folk, health insurance means better nursing care and disability cover. Most health insurance companies provide insurers the ability to fill in names of dependents. This is an excellent option to take advantage of as children are the most prone to both fall and hurt themselves or to fall sick. Health insurance is vital to the athlete. Athletes are as prone to hurt themselves as children. They will break ankles, hip bones, collar bones etc. All this has to be paid for. Having health insurance ensures that it is done.

It is not easy to pay for health insurance. Because of the lifestyle of today’s young and old alike, many insurance companies have raised their premium payments. This is proof positive that they expect people to drop dead at any given time due to their eating habits and lack of exercise etc.

Therefore, persons who like to eat greasy burgers and watch TV all day, getting health insurance should be their number one priority for the day.

How Do Erectile Dysfunction Products Work?

At some time in a man’s life, erectile dysfunction is bound to occur. This is because the reasons for erectile dysfunction can range from emotional causes such as stress or psychological problems (being taught that sex was “dirty” or the sexual urge was something to be ashamed of, for example) or because of prostate surgery, just to name a few of reasons. This is where erectile dysfunction products can help.

Erectile dysfunction products work in different ways, depending on the type of active ingredient they contain. For example, Viagra’s active ingredient issildenafil citrate.Sildenafil citrate blocks an enzyme that is produced by the male body. This enzyme actually attacks a necessary chemical that must be produced in order for an erection to occur.

This chemical is called cyclic GMP, and it is the presence of this chemical that causes the arteries in the penis to expand thus increasing blood flow to the penis. The increased blood flow from the arteries causes the veins in the penis to become narrower. This creates a sort of “back-up” if you will, because the blood is coming into the penis faster than it is flowing out. The result is a nice, firm erection.

That is, an erection will occur unless a little enzyme happens to come along which blocks the production of cyclic GMP. Even a small amount of blockage of cyclic GMP can cause erectile dysfunction. Viagra, however, blocks this little “buzz-killing” enzyme and actually allows more cyclic GMP to reach the penis. And more cyclic GMP means a firmer erection.

Now cyclic GMP will not be produced at all unless there is sufficient sexual stimulation. And the stimulation has to be physical, mental, and emotional. So, all these jokes and comedic scenes where someone is hurrying to get home before the Viagra wears off aren’t true. It’s most likely impossible to simply “think” hard enough (no pun intended) to get any erectile dysfunction medication to work.

The Benefits of Health Insurance

As of March 2010, the United States has embarked on a four-year plan to reform its health care system, dedicating $960 billion dollars to making prescriptions cheaper, requiring insurance companies like Medicaid to cover more ofAmericans‘ medical costs, changing the way that prescription drugs are manufactured, priced and distributed — and more.

The ideal situation is for every individual in America to have some form of health insurance and with the often staggering cost of modern major health procedures, the inflated salaries of doctors and the increasing complications in getting some hospitals to even accept certain forms of insurance, many feel it’s high time for a change. Health insurance provides a protective buffer between you and paying full price for health care, and covers the needs of those with disabilities and those with long-term medical conditions as well as emergency medical care for injuries and accidents.

The heath care reform works in smaller ways as well. For example, it has already implemented new changes that require Medicaid prescriptions to be covered for 23 percent of the cost instead of the past 15.1 percent. This is not just good for those who receive the prescriptions but also for Medicaid, as drug manufacturers must increase the rebate amount offered to Medicaid in accordance with the new laws as well. The federal health care reform plans include a requirement by law for all Americans to have health insurance by 2014. Many Americans do not currently have health insurance due to financial constraints, but not having health insurance from 2014 onward will result in a penalty tax. Therefore, if you don’t already have health insurance, you should look into it now.

Quotes from various companies can easily be acquired online and because many are offered free of charge your options are unlimited; you can compare insurance quote after insurance quote from as many companies as you like until you find the right insurance plan for you and your budget.

Is Addiction a Disease?

One of the biggest health care debates today is whether or not addiction is actually a disease. While most private health insurance policies that cover mental health also cover addiction treatment, it often comes with more conditions and restrictions than any other health problem. Let’s take a look at a few of the issues that arise with this specific debate:

Should Addiction be Considered a Disease

While most experts consider addiction a disease, many others consider it a simple weakness. However, not too long ago, most other mental illnesses like depression were considered weaknesses, as well. When you consider addiction seems to be inherited, and some people seem to be destined to addiction while others can experiment without lasting problems, it’s probably only a matter of time before all addiction is officially considered a disease.

What’s the Big Deal?

Well, the big deal is money. If addiction is considered an official disease, both private and publicly funded health care would have to fork over more money as restrictions and conditions to treatment are removed. Also, the financially-strapped social security system would then have to recognize addiction as a potentially disabling condition and add even more people to its already long list of payees.

Does Rehab Paid for by Insurer’s Work?

Currently, any form of health insurance puts a strict limit on how long you can stay in a rehab center that it is paying for. For some people, this short treatment option is enough. For others, it falls far short of what is needed. If you can afford to pay out-of-pocket for rehab, you can receive an extended treatment program that may be more successful. To find the best rehab centers, use Rehab-International.org. They list government-funded rehab centers in addition to those that take private insurance.

If you have a problem with drugs or alcohol, don’t wait to find help. A stay in a rehab center could be the change you’ve been looking for!

Sleep And Health Issues

Sleep is very important for our health since its one of the main factors which controls and co-ordinates our bodily activities. Sleep is essential like breathing and eating and all other daily routines. A person can even manage without food or water for 2-3 days but without sleeping for more than 4 days a man could die. A person needs a minimum of 7 hours sleep out of 24 hours. Improper sleeps leads to many health issues. One of the health problems is hypertension. Other than that mental stress also occurs due to improper sleep. Release of hormones, learning, working everything is related to sleep. ‘Insomnia’ is one of the sleep disorders, commonly found is men and older persons. It is the inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Sleeping issues can be handled easily if it is noted in the starting stages. Smoking can also lead to sleep issues.

For sleeping properly, a time table is to be fixed and make sure it does not change. Once a time is fixed a biological clock within us sets the time itself and thus a routine is formed. If this time is changed then sleep issues will haunt us. Usage of computer and television should be minimized else it will stress our brain too much leading to improper sleep. To get a good sleep, bedrooms can be kept dark and silence should be maintained. Sleeping means giving rest to brain and hence mind should be well relaxed. Do not keep computers or television in bedrooms. If you have one be sure it is switched off before you sleep. Radiations from such kind of appliances can lead to sleep disorders. A comfortable mattress and proper exercises give you good sleep. Reading should always be avoided while going to sleep. Once sleep is proper and in routine health issues related to sleep can be avoided.
